POST #34 - PLANNING: DIRECTORIAL STYLE

My choice for directorial influence is slightly unconventional, but it fits with my unconventional theme. My chosen style is the style of Jack Douglass.

Jack Douglass, also known as Jacksfilms, is an internet comedian, singer, musician and all around entertainer. His brand is mostly known for memes and jokes, both of which are main focuses of his channel. Over the 10 year lifespan of his YouTube channel, Douglass has made numerous music videos, covering almost every single base possible. He's made songs spanning holidays (including Thanksgiving, somehow), historical figures, the YouTube landscape, etc.

While his original songs aren't going to break chart records at any point, his music videos have amassed millions of views individually; impressive, considering that most of the time, it's a one man operation involving Douglass himself.

His editing style allows for jokes to hit harder, usually due to the deliberate cutting off of dialogue. For a good example of this, take "Christmas is my favourite freaking holiday". In the lead up to the main song, Jack and his friend Sean have a conversation about Christmas songs. Jack, disregarding what Sean says about Christmas songs, tries to steer the conversation to have Sean ask what his favourite seasonal song is. After about 7 seconds of silence between the two, and awkward looks between the two, Sean gives in and asks. However, the video cuts off Sean before he can finish his statement, due to Jack's exaggerated character being too excited to wait for him to finish his sentence. These factors combined make the impact of the joke a lot stronger, whereas letting Sean finish weakens the joke. This kind of editing is what I want to incorporate; combining footage with cuts that could seem accidental, but are in an attempt to hit a better joke.

Jack's editing is also fairly simple, almost amateur. However, this is a stylistic choice. In his trilogy of "Royalty Free Christmas Songs", there are several pieces of text which are very clearly drawn using the trackpad of his Macbook. Making "silly" edits into a video also helps increase the meme status of it. Those are real words that I just typed. I don't regret this theme.

In response to this, I want to make my cuts more effective with comedy, and have some cheesy, intentionally bad segments of the music video. Ideas I've had based on these ideas aren't fully developed yet, but I have one set in stone idea: the poster that Alan rips down from the wall will be written in Comic Sans. The font is usually considered unprofessional and childish, and reached cult status as a meme in itself. And so, considering the term "unprofessional" being associated with the font, and the unprofessional-esque practices Douglass puts into place, the two go hand-in-hand.
