POST #14 - IDEA SO FAR?
So, the idea so far!
One thing I've noticed with previous pieces of work in A2, it's all very... edgy. By this, I mean they're
And making stuff like that really isn't my preferred style. I prefer making things that are fun, that people can get a good laugh out of! That was partially the thought process for the AS project, but this time I want to make the project more than just fun; I want it to be FUNNY.
Why? Because I feel like that's a staple of the things I make independently. My previous media coursework revolved around a ridiculous concept with language that was so outdated that it was ironically entertaining. My first piece of art multimedia coursework was based around an anthropomorphic soft drink can. My YouTube animations revolve around parodying movies, TV shows and music by poking fun at them. Fun is one of the few things that I think I can capture fairly well. So why not hone it by using it in a medium I've no experience in; music videos?
In that regard, I want to build a music video around one word; MEMES.
Memes are a part of internet culture, regarding a popular trend that goes viral, leading people to make their own versions of memes. For example, when a song from the children's show "LazyTown" was realised as a meme, people remixed it by putting different spins on it; this video is probably the best example at showcasing some different memes of "We Are Number One", while being a meme in itself.
Riveting stuff.
Memes are something that I really enjoy, and often me and my friends enjoy them collectively. They bring me a lot of joy, so maybe if my music video is meme based, then I can bring joy to someone else.
I have 2 songs I would like to use, and I'm still debating which one to use.
1) All Star by Smash Mouth
This song has been a meme for the past couple of years, due to it commonly being attached to the 2001 film "Shrek", which is also a meme. The song is about the life of whoever is singing it (no particular person attached to the lyrics), and their interactions with people in life. Specifically, the advice being given. There are several lines which refer back to "advice", including:
But the messages of the song aren't what drew me to it. What drew me was it's status as a meme. It is THE meme song.
2) More Than Just Memes by Elliot Explicit
This song is relatively new. It was made as a part of the YouTuber Thomas "TomSka" Ridgewell's project "Last Week", in which he vlogs his life. For one week recently, his friends all took over. For the Sunday, his friend / editor Elliot only presented a music video, based on the persona the fans had given him; the man in love with memes. This song isn't just a meme because it's a popular song, it's a self aware song about being a meme.
The song has lyrics that are meant to be laughed at, such as:
So, that's what I've got so far. Memes is my chosen theme, and I have my song choices. It's wayyy too close of a call to decide which one to go with, it might even come down to something like a coin flip to decide which I go for.
Anyways, that's it for now!

The song has lyrics that are meant to be laughed at, such as:
- "Ooh, dat's VEWY nice" (the OFFICIAL lyrical spelling there)
- "Oh, sh*t, waddup, it's your boi" (again, that's how the lyrics spell it)
- "Deborah... why did you leave me"
- "I'm not addicted to memes"
So, that's what I've got so far. Memes is my chosen theme, and I have my song choices. It's wayyy too close of a call to decide which one to go with, it might even come down to something like a coin flip to decide which I go for.
