POST #28 - PLANNING: CAST AND CHARACTERS

There are 2 main characters who appear throughout the entire music video, and another character who only appears at the start; - ALAN HAMLIN  - The main character.  AGE - 19 GENDER - Male INTERESTS - Memes, playing guitar, drinking Starbucks with friends FAVOURITE MOVIES - Shrek , Mystery Men , Digimon The Movie BACKSTORY - He's been on a bit of a downward spiral as of recent. He lost his girlfriend to a guy name Chad from a poor loss in a poker game. Curiously, he never bet her in the game; she bet herself after seeing how loaded Chad actually was. Alan had usually been good at poker, with all sorts of strategies and a dead-on poker face. But apparently, it wasn't good enough against Chad. So he's been awfully lonely. He's lost 90% of his savings to Chad, and Lisa won't even treat him as an equal anymore. PERSONALITY - Cocky (but he's working on it), doesn't give up easily, sentimental POTENTIAL CAST - Blair Liversidge, Eddie Pratt, Ellio...

POST #23, #24 AND #25 - AUDIENCE RESEARCH

PREPARATION From the audience research, I would like to Investigate what the general public consumes typically, in terms of digital media Find opinions on different types of digital media from a range of age groups Find out which platforms and services are typically used to consume media, and if there's any correlation between services used by whichever age groups use them The questions I plan on asking are as follows; Which do you prefer; music videos or short films? What was the last music video you watched? What was the last short film you watched? How often do you consume either piece of media? Do you ever consume either piece of media as a part of a group? Which platforms do you use to consume music videos? Which platforms do you use to consume short films? Are you aware of the song "All Star" by Smash Mouth? (IF 8 = YES) Do you like this song? (IF 8 = YES) Where did you find out about this song? There will be a flow of questions, all depending ...

POST #22 - FORMS AND CONVENTIONS

HOW ARE YOU PLANNING TO CONFORM TO FORMS AND CONVENTIONS? - I want to use a few conventions of other music videos, but my main goal is to break as many of them as possible. So this means not taking the music video too seriously, and having fun with it. Most of the music videos seen nowadays don't have much fun (see Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood" or Panic! at the Disco's "Death of a Bachelor"). I want to harken back to the late 90s / early 00s, when music videos knew to have a sense of humour and didn't try and be edgy. There are a couple of music videos nowadays that have fun, such as Panic! at the Disco's "Don't Threaten Me With A Good Time", and OK Go's "Here It Goes Again". WHERE ARE YOU PLANNING ON DEVELOPING EXISTING FORMS AND CONVENTIONS? - I want to develop the convention of a typical breakup song music video... by challenging it head on. Most breakup music videos show the singer walking around, singing about the...

POST #12 - PRACTICE TASK EVALUATION

What went well? Whilst filming, numerous things went well. Firstly, the weather was perfect for our idea. We had planned to film outside, so a rainy or windy day would have been bad for the film and the camera. It was hugely sunny and hot, so the lighting was perfect for filming. Our idea revolved around a relationship, and was generally happy, so bright, sunny lighting was perfect. What didn't go well? What will you do/not do next time? The main problem we had with our filming was organisation. This was in many forms; first of all, it was difficult to choose a date and place that was available for all of us. Some of our group don't live in Wymondham, so it was difficult for them to get to the location. Moreover, the task was just before our mock exams, so it was a rather busy time, so we struggled to organise a time to meet. Once we did meet at the location, we hadn't created a proper plan of our video, let alone what we were doing on that day exactly. Because of th...

POST #20 - WES ANDERSON PRACTICE TASK

Image
Another task set by my teacher was to plan, organise, film, and edit a Wes Anderson's style music video in under two hours. We got into groups that ended up as Lily, Daisy, Tazmin and I in one team. We did lots of research into how Wes Anderson usually directs his work.. Here is some of the research we used.. Just as with the tracking shot, Anderson’s deep-rooted love of symmetry in all of his shot compositions has taken shape over time. Traces of this trait can be seen in all of his early movies, of course, but cut to present, and his initial obsession has bloomed into full-blown mania. The man simply cannot resist the draw of reciprocal arrangement of props and characters in front of his camera. This attribute pops up in  Bottle Rocket  and  Rushmore , but check out everything from  The Royal Tenenbaums  onward, and it becomes more and more prevalent. the song we chose... our final video...

Image
One-Take Music Video "Before we begin our actual coursework, we were given the opportunity to complete one more practice task. This practice task, however, contains a twist: we were assigned the task of producing a music video filmed in one entirely continuous shot. For this assignment, we formed into groups of three. My group included Wendy, Emily and myself. We were given a list of 6 songs to choose from to create a video for. Our group opted to use 'Galway Girl' by Ed Sheeran. The reason we chose this is that, firstly, we wanted to choose one that wasn't being used by any other groups to ensure originality. Secondly, it was the most fun and appealing out of all the songs left. There were several rules we had to follow for this video. Obviously, it had to be filmed in one take. However, we also needed to include at least four people in it. Another thing we had to make sure was that it was fun and corresponded with the upbeat song we had chosen. Lastly, it had to be p...

POST #18 - THE PLAN / DRAGON'S DEN PITCH

TIME FOR THE MUSIC VIDEO PLAAAAN Lets-a go 1) Which brief are you taking? -  A music video. 2) The style of music / artist? - My chosen song is All Star by All Star; both of which are more pop-style of music, although it's also listed as being "alternative rock" as well. 3) (n/a for music video) 4) Idea for the narrative so far? - Right, here goes with that ol' idea. A guy. Down on his luck, busking in the city with an ill-defined song. He's just broken up with his girlfriend. While he counts up his earnings from the day before heading home, a woman approaches him. She asks if she can give him some advice; "The world is gonna roll you." After hearing this advice, the guy is given a new lease on life. This is where the song starts playing! His music the next day, performing All Star, is more joyful and defined. A musician scout finds the guy, and brings him onto his record label. Eventually, as time goes on, he becomes more successful. Per...
